Your version is better, but I'll gladly be a Watson to your Holmes. (Some, while not possessing genius in themselves inspire it in others.)

If you're really good you can pat yourself on the back with one hand and make the other available for kissing...

@Fr. John, Ah, so THAT'S why being ambidexterous is a qualification for the priesthood. :)
(WV: reverim... really!)

I guess I've been sheltered but I have never met the clergy often described here.

Hey, Mr. Curmudgeophan, when a really good homily plops out of my mouth, it takes me by such surprise (if memory serves--it has been a while) that I can be excused for spending a little time in shock. It is disorienting when it happens. Just be patient and I will rejoin the congregation momentarily.

It's not just an "Orthodox thing". I remember back in 1974 one of the stories in homiletics was when CH Spurgeon finished preaching one Sunday and someone said to him, "That was a wonderful sermon", he replied, "I know, Satan already told me..."

JD., Thank God. There is wisdom in the admonition "Don't know too many priests" (unless all you have known are goofy ones, then you just might need to know one more. :)

I just wrote this HUGE response and lost it! Let me summarize:

- I spoke at chapel today on the Harrowing of Hell using the appropriate icon and the "Gospel of Nicodemus". It went well.

The trick is making your patting yourself on the back look like you are really flagellating yourself for your many sins, while people are kissing your other hand. It adds that special seasoning of hypocrisy that I am sometimes so good at, sad to say. That is why I have a Father Confessor, who is quite able to whap me on the back of the head just like you see on NCIS (yes, I watch TV).

Fr. Ernesto, LOL! Image is everything... Actually, the thing that continually floors me is the way the Fathers nail my "false humility" which is a bigger issue than "in your face pride and arrogance". Sigh.
