It would be even more funny if it weren't so sadly true.. (I like the night in a tent with a lion, btw).

You're flirting with plagiarism here. I think I've seen that exact ad in an archdiocesan magazine.

[weep]

This is great! We will be using this when a friend will translate selected texts about the "Secularisation of monasticism" by Elder Paisios, later this year...this just fits perfectly for the internet...! The Elder also uses humour to depict the secularisation of some modern monastics...with your permission of course.

AtM, Feel free to use anything you like. I'm not a "copyright" kind of guy. The texts sound interesting, I look forward to seeing what Elder Paisios has to say.

Fr. Nicholas and Anon, yup.

I've noticed, but it's always polite to ask... :)

should I assume that you are a copyleft kind of guy ?

I hope there is no copylefting going on! That's worse than the copyrights it was designed to undo. I won't go on and on about it now, but I will say that releasing it into the public domain is the way to go if you don't want copyrights. Copylefting, license proliferation, and trying to extend one's "power" indefinitely into the future to control--impersonally, legalistically control--others is extraordinarily problematic, at best, from an Orthodox standpoint.

But to the cartoon itself, the difference between asceticism and voyeurism or dilettantism is that one is denial of the passions while the other is the indulgence of them. This is communicated wonderfully in the drawing. The same is true for the more mundane things in our lives, too: are we doing something (eating, drinking, reading, watching, speaking, working, going, thinking, etc) to deny ourselves, control our desires, and follow in the steps of our crucified Lord, or are we doing it because we can get away with it, feel self-important, and get one more "Ortho-badge" on our [surely unnoticed and unadmitted] one-way trip down to Hell? As I like to say, there is a huge difference between trying to be Orthodox and trying to seem Orthodox.

Actually Copyleft is just a step in stopping big companies getting everything without giving nothing. Small businesses have nothing to fear from Copyleft, but Huge Companies SHOULD fear it.

That said, I too believe in the public domain idea. But Copyleft wouldn't be needed if Copyright restrictions weren't so...restrictive and legalistic and almost offensive at times. Sometimes the cure (copyleft) is as hard as the disease (huge corporate misuse)

If you release something in the public domain, and a company finds it, they can simply change it a bit and claim it as theirs. Copyleft protects from that and insures that it remains FREE. That is the charitable way to go , in my opinion. Of course, Copyleft has its faults and it is not intended for every kind of use...there are different licences for differnt things, thank God. Saying THIS is bad and THAT is Good (TM) is a bit manihaistic, at best. All these are just tools, you can use them in different ways.

In this case, Steve's work is not going to get hijacked by huge corporate beasts :D , so Public domain is a much better option, of course.

The real problem is the Copyright Laws that do not leave space for innovation and they stiffle artistic Freedom. A reformation of the Copyright current status would surely eliminate any need for Copyleft. Copyleft is the answer along the lines of a legalistic system. And of course, noone is IMPOSING Copyleft. That would be a "Bad Thing"(TM)

Here is a critique of the Current Copyright status:

Copyright and Community How are the big Corporations using our laws to take away our freedoms? (this guy should be REALLY Orthodox: look at all those hair and beard!!)

Copyright, lending and the web

Not only that, it's a pan-orthodox problem too...you should see "Sacred Tourism" (that term really exists!) in Greece..
