What I Learned from Pontius Pilate

At the reading of the Gospel this morning this jumped out at me:
Jesus is before Pilate. The Jews tell him He deserves death because He made Himself to be the Son of God. And Pilate becomes even more troubled....

Pilate had the good sense to be fearful of a man who claimed to be God. In this age no one is troubled at the claim of Christ, sometimes not even me. How did it become so easy to dismiss offhand someone who says he is God? It doesn't even occur to people to ask themselves, "What if He really IS....?" If He did the things they said He did, and said the things they claimed He said... Then if we even dare to ask the question we must answer one way or the other and either way face the most outrageous reality the earth has known.

You know what really jumped out at me? When Jesus said to Pilate, "You would have no power over Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore, he who delivered Me to you has the greater sin."

I'd love to have a discussion about that.

Hi Philippa,
That has always been a mysterious statement to me too. Perhaps the greater sin was the sin against the opportunity Judas had to have his "power" informed by the love of God, whereas Pilate did not. The bridegroom matins services about Judas are powerful where Christ asks him, "Did I pass you by when I washed feet? Did I pass you by when I gave the bread?" etc. He had it all, and betrayed it.

Unfortunately, we didn't have Bridegroom Matins so I've not heard those prayers before.

I wonder if the power Jesus spoke of to Pilate, since it was related directly to Him who is God, had to have come from the Father. Whereas Judas made a choice out of his freewill and it was the power over himself to choose that he betrayed too.

I dunno. I may have to ask my priest.
